Possible delays on approach roads to/from the airport

Published: 15 July 2011

The delivery of large loads to Aberthaw Power Station may lead to delays on the approach roads to and from Cardiff Airport on certain dates in July and August.

The following press release has been issued on behalf of Aberthaw Power Station:

Dates and Routes Announced for Delivery of Large Loads to Aberthaw Power Station

RWE npower has recently begun to construct a carbon capture demonstration plant at Aberthaw Power Station.  To facilitate this, it will be necessary to transport some very large components from Barry Docks to the site during July and August.

To ensure this is done with the minimum impact on the local road network, our specialist contractor Abnormal Load Engineering has worked in consultation with the Highways Agency and the local Police to carefully choose the best possible routes to transport the components.

South Wales Police will escort the loads from Barry Docks to Aberthaw Power Station.  All emergency vehicles will be able to pass the loads and, where possible, the Police will allow other traffic to pass ensuring disruption is kept to a minimum.  However, road users can expect some delays along the routes and are advised to plan their journey accordingly before setting off.

The seven large loads are expected to take around two hours to travel the twelve miles from Barry Docks to Aberthaw Power Station.

The first scheduled movement date is as follows:

  • Saturday 23 July, leaving Barry Docks at approximately 6am

The remaining loads will be moved in pairs, with two loads being transported per day for three days between the following dates:

  • Monday 15 August – Thursday 18 August
  • The loads will be moved between 9.30am – 4.30pm to avoid peak traffic times.

Due to the potential difficulties caused by transporting the loads under the bridge on the power station approach road, there is likely to be particular disruption to traffic on the B4265 in the vicinity of Aberthaw.

The loads will be brought by sea to Barry Docks where they will be transferred to the specialist vehicles that will transport them to Aberthaw Power Station.  On leaving Barry Docks, the vehicles will travel to Aberthaw via the following route:

  • A4055 Cardiff Road
  • A4231 Barry Docks Link Road
  • A4050 Port Road
  • A4226 Port Road West
  • B4265 to Aberthaw Power Station

Please note, the final dates and times are subject to clearance from the Police and highways authorities.
