Welsh produce for passengers on St David’s Day
Published: 01 March 2011
Cardiff Airport is celebrating St David’s Day by offering more Welsh products than ever to its customers, with the introduction of Welsh products to its Executive Lounge and other catering facilities.
In March 2009 the airport revealed a revised name and brand designed to reflect a ‘sense of place’ and Welsh national identity, and has since strived to incorporate this vision into all elements of the business, ranging from communications to signage and from marketing to catering.
Welsh whiskey, gin and cream liqueur supplied by Penderyn is available for lounge customers, as well as Tan y Castell Welsh cakes from Pembrokeshire, Tregroes Waffles from Llandysul, SA Brains beer and lager by Celt Experience of Caerphilly.
Our catering partner SSP, the Food Travel Experts, is responsible for running the food and beverage units including the Fly Half Bar, Echo Bar, Caffé Ritazza and Food Village, and also offer a variety of Welsh products including homemade Welsh Cakes, Red Sky crisps made with Anglesey Salt as well as Brains SA and Smooth, which is proving extremely popular with Welsh rugby supporters over the Six Nations tournament.
The Nuance tax and duty free shop in the departure lounge contributes towards the airport’s aim to create a Welsh identity by also selling Penderyn products, as well as jewellery made by Welsh artists and Welsh souvenirs for returning visitors.
This year airport staff will also be celebrating St David’s Day through participating in The Great Daffodil Corporate Challenge day organised by charity Marie Curie Cancer Care. A team from the airport will take time out of the office to make collections at the St David’s Centre to raise funds towards a local Marie Curie Hospice located close to the airport in Penarth.
Cassie Houghton, marketing and PR manager for Cardiff Airport said: “In keeping with the Cardiff Airport brand which focuses on our 'Welshness' we wanted to ensure the lounge and other facilities had a real sense of place and showed off quality Welsh produce. This is not only a unique way for international passengers to get a taste of Wales when they depart, but is also good for our local travellers to feel a great sense of pride when travelling from their national airport.
We’re also pleased to be giving back to our community on St David’s Day through contributing our time and efforts to fundraising activities for a worthy, local cause, along with other companies in the region.”
