Surprise celebration for radio presenter

Bro Radio’s Station manager Steve Powell celebrated his 50th birthday in style with a surprise visit to Cardiff Airport to broadcast the breakfast show live from the terminal.
On his way to work at his usual studio in Bro Radio's headquarters at the HUB in Barry's YMCA Steve received a phone call live on air from presenter Matthew Wilson asking him to turn around and head for the airport. The aviation enthusiast celebrated his birthday by playing music in the terminal and chatting to passengers heading off to sunnier climates.
The presenter was given a birthday cake during the show and was taken on a tour behind the scenes following the broadcast including a visit to the airport's air traffic control tower to meet the NATS team in charge at Cardiff.
Steve said of his visit: "I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the airport and it was great to try something different and to do a live broadcast from such an unusual location.
I have a passion for aviation and therefore was over the moon when I got the call to head for the airport. It was a fantastic surprise and a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday with all our listeners."
Cassie Houghton, Cardiff Airport's marketing and PR manager added: "It was great to be part of the celebrations with Steve. Having a radio station broadcasting live in the terminal offered something different to our passengers and to listeners in the airport's community and we were delighted to be involved with the show."
Bro Radio began transmitting on 31 March 2009, broadcasting a mix of music and chat for the Vale of Glamorgan. The station reaches listeners in Barry, Penarth and other parts of the Vale.
