Intra Wales air travel growing again

Published: 19 August 2011

Manx2.com has announced significant growth in passengers on the air route between Cardiff and Anglesey. In the last three months, passenger numbers have risen by nearly 30%, and in the same period, there have been no delays on the route with every flight arriving early or on time.

Manx2.com and partner carrier FLM Aviation has been contracted to provide the twice daily weekday intra-Wales air service since May 2010.

Since then, passenger numbers have been steadily increasing and in the last three months, have risen by nearly 30%, with more than 1,000 passengers carried in July alone.

Chairman of Manx2.com Noel Hayes said: ‘The market is growing again as communities at both ends of the route have responded to the reliability, punctuality and time saving offered by the flights and a range of new lower leisure fares, which start from £24.95.

‘The growth in passenger numbers clearly illustrates how important the intra-Wales air service is to communities in the North and South of the country, by maintaining connectivity in these difficult times, and helping contribute to economic growth.’

Dewi Williams, Head of Highways and Waste Management at Isle of Anglesey County Council said: ‘We congratulate Manx2.com on the growth of this service. Having this North – South air link is vital in keeping our country connected and developing the economy of the whole country.  The 100% reliability and punctuality in the period has no doubt been a factor in the growth of this route, and we hope the people of Wales will continue to increase their use of this convenient service.’

Manx2.com’s Celtic connections were further strengthened by this summer’s seasonal flights between Anglesey and the Isle of Man, which along with the flights to Cardiff, are the only commercial flights operating from RAF Valley.  There were also special flights from Cardiff to the Isle of Man for the duration of the Isle of Man TT festival period, which proved popular with fans of the world famous event.

Spencer Birns, Head of Commercial Operations and Air Services Development at Cardiff Airport added: “It is great to see that Manx2 is reaping the rewards as a result of offering excellent service to customers.

The airline’s reliability and growth in passenger numbers is to be commended, and it’s encouraging to see airlines like Manx2 with operations from Cardiff Airport developing a relationship with Welsh customers through excellent service and attractive prices.

We hope the figures will assist Manx2 in establishing solid foundations at Cardiff Airport, and will encourage the airline to offer more services from Wales’ national airport in future.”
