Christmas getaway at Cardiff Airport

Published: 13 December 2011

Cardiff Airport is expecting over 25,000 passengers to travel through its doors over the Christmas school holidays period from 16 December 2011 to 03 January 2012.

Flights to Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Newcastle, Glasgow, Belfast and Edinburgh are proving popular with travellers looking for city breaks over the Christmas and New Year period, and many will also be connecting onwards from hubs such as Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin to exotic worldwide destinations.

As well as winter sun destinations such as Egypt, Cyprus, the Canaries and Spain, flights to Zurich, within easy reach of the Swiss Alps are also attracting skiers who can take advantage of Helvetic Airways’ free ski transfer offer over the festive period.

Spencer Birns, Cardiff Airport’s Head of Commercial Operations and Air Services Development commented: “As usual we’re looking forward to welcoming Welsh travellers to the airport over the Christmas period, and are getting into the Christmas spirit with decorations and festive music in the terminal.

We hope the weather doesn’t deteriorate, however we have robust winter operations plans in place to ensure we’re prepared and are able to keep disruptions to a minimum should snow cause problems.

2012 promises to be an exciting year for us, with a new airline, Vueling, starting operations to Barcelona from March, and a transatlantic service to Orlando starting in May with tour operator Cosmos. In a tough economic climate we’re hopeful these new services will prove successful in order to encourage airlines and operators to expand their services further from the region.”

Passengers travelling to the airport during the Christmas holidays are advised to allow plenty of time for the journey to the airport, and particular attention should be given to public transport services as there may be some restrictions to regular timetables over the period.

Passengers wishing to carry Christmas Crackers should consult their airline before arriving at the airport and are reminded not to travel with wrapped presents in hand luggage as it may be necessary for presents to be opened during the security procedure.
