Airport announces sponsorship of the Cardiff Design Festival

Published: 08 September 2010

Cardiff Airport is delighted to announce its sponsorship of the Cardiff Design Festival.

Convened by UWIC's Cardiff School of Art and Design, the Festival celebrates the best of Welsh design through a programme of events each October that inform, inspire and provoke.

The Festival provides a spotlight on the design sector and shows how design affects every aspect of our lives from the beds we sleep in to the way cereal packets keep our breakfast fresh, how journeys to work are signposted and our work places are designed.

Olwen Moseley, the Festival's Director and Director of Enterprise at CSAD said: "There is a wealth of talented designers and design thinkers in the city and across Wales and it's the Festival's mission to ensure that their skills and passion are recognised and valued by the public and by business as well as by fellow design professionals.

Having the backing of Cardiff Airport will be extremely valuable in helping publicise this and the contribution that designers make to the local economy."

The design community organises a series of talks, exhibitions and events that will run from 1 to 16 October this year and whether you're a designer or not you'll love what is planned including the chance to see the Best of Welsh Design Showcase exhibition which will be on show at the Senedd and at the Wales Millennium Centre as well as other venues across the city during October.

The emphasis for the Showcase Awards is on results, not just what looks great but on what impact has been made through the designs.

Cassie Houghton, Cardiff Airport's marketing and PR manager added: "Arts and Culture is one of the key areas the airport's Touchdown Programme supports, and therefore this was the ideal opportunity for us to support such a great initiative based in the capital of such a culturally rich country.

We're delighted to sponsor such an exciting festival which continues to grow every year, and hope the event will be a great success enjoyed by visitors from all over Wales and beyond."

Other events taking place include a one day conference on creativity in tough economic conditions organised by the Institute of Welsh Affairs,  a contemporary textiles exhibition at the Howard Gardens Gallery, in Cardiff, the Staziker Jones and the Central Illustration Agency's talk about book illustration, the launch of the Design Wales/SEE Project' Design Manifesto' creating awareness of the impact of industrial, social and service design, a games event organised by ThinkArk and design drawing events for children and their mums and dads at Chapter and in Royal and Morgan Arcades.
